“My Family Made Me a Beggar”: Joseph’s Story of Survival After Losing Both Hands

BTF Network is proud to introduce “The Real Life Fighters,” a show dedicated to finding the most moving personal journeys. Our first guest is Joseph, and this is his inspiring life story. Specifically, he sells lottery tickets in Vyttila and shared his unbelievable journey of survival and hope with our host.

A Tragic Accident: An Inspiring Life Story Begins

Joseph’s life changed forever at age 14. First, after running away from home, he was traveling on a train. Suddenly, as it approached Nellayi station, he fell between the platform and the moving train. The accident was horrific. In fact, both of his hands were completely severed.

Rejected and Cast Out

In the hospital, his family did not come for him. Later, when he finally returned home, he was not welcomed. “A bird with a broken wing cannot fly,” Joseph said, “I was a burden to them.”

His family’s solution was shocking. For example, they hung a “donation box” sign around his neck and turned him into a beggar. Consequently, Joseph soon left and began living on the streets of Aluva. Unfortunately, he fell in with a bad crowd and struggled with drug addiction just to survive.

A New Life and a New Lie

Eventually, Joseph prayed to St. Antony for “two hands,” which he meant as a partner to help him. He eventually met his wife, Mary. However, to get her family to agree, his relatives had to lie. This was a pivotal moment in his inspiring life story.

From Begging to a Life of Dignity

For years, Joseph survived by begging. Then, this changed in 1990 when the collector banned begging in Kochi. This ban forced him to find a new path. As a result, he decided to start selling lottery tickets. Indeed, he has been running his own business with dignity for over 35 years.

An Inspiring Life Story of Unwavering Hope

Joseph’s life has seen recent tragedy as well. He shared the heartbreaking story of losing his grandson, Albin, in a bike accident. Moreover, in an act of incredible generosity, his grandson’s organs were donated, saving six other lives.

Ultimately, despite this, Joseph refuses to stop working. He does not want to be a burden to his children. His inspiring life story is best captured by his own words: “I am like a fisherman casting a net. Therefore, I have hope that if not today, I will get it tomorrow.”
