In the world of Malayalam cinema, actor Dileep is often associated with fast-paced, catchy folk numbers that instantly hook the audience. However, in this exclusive segment from our interview with music legend Berny (of the Berny-Ignatius duo), the composer reveals how the 2006 movie Chess demanded a complete departure from this formula.

Berny recounts the specific brief given by the scriptwriters, Udayakrishna and Siby K. Thomas (Sibi-Udayan), for a critical dance competition sequence. The situation required a track that sounded technically superior—a “winning song” that could plausibly defeat a rival in a classical dance-off. This led to the creation of the complex, semi-classical masterpiece “Chandam Kalindi”.

In a candid moment, Berny describes the unique pressure of working with Dileep. “He will squeeze us dry,” Berny jokes, referring to the actor’s perfectionism and demand for instant chartbusters. Yet, for Chess, the duo turned the tables by composing a sophisticated track that was as challenging for the actor to perform on screen as it was for the singers, K.J. Yesudas and K.S. Chithra, to record.
