The Untold Story of Mammootty’s Actual First Song Before ‘Pallavur Devanarayanan’

It is a widely accepted fact in Malayalam cinema history that Megastar Mammootty made his playback singing debut in 1999 with the movie Pallavur Devanarayanan. However, in this explosive revelation on BTF Network, music legend Berny (of the Berny-Ignatius duo) rewrites history.

Berny reveals that Mammootty actually recorded a song for them decades earlier, around 1987, during the filming of the blockbuster New Delhi. The track, a playful children’s song titled “Katha Katha Naayare”, was recorded on an old-school 4-track spool system, which meant there was no technology to “cut and paste” vocals—the actor had to sing it in one continuous take.

“Don’t Conduct, Just Move Your Lips!” Berny shares a fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdote about Mammootty’s unique recording method. When Berny tried to “conduct” the orchestra to guide the actor, Mammootty stopped him. “I don’t need conducting,” the Megastar said. “Just move your lips to the lyrics, and I will follow.” Berny describes how he sat in the console, silently mouthing the lyrics like a “human prompter,” while Mammootty watched his lips through the glass and sang the difficult, fast-paced lyrics like “Kanjirakkatt Ambalathil” with absolute precision.
