Baiju Ezhupunna opens up about his early days, long before he became a familiar face in Mollywood. He shares a deeply personal memory from 45 years ago when he was just a schoolboy who happened to own a cinema hall, Regal Theatre. His ultimate dream wasn’t fame or “success” (a feeling he says he still doesn’t quite grasp), but simply to see his own face on his theater’s screen.

When he finally got his chance in the film ‘First Bell’, he didn’t wait for the studio to promote him. He took charge. Baiju sir recounts how he borrowed the film’s costume, and in a striking example of resourceful passion, he did his own makeup using the black soot from firewood (വിറക്). He then directed his photographer friend, the late Sunny, to capture the exact shot he had envisioned for his “photo card” (the small posters displayed at theaters back then). He even instructed Sunny on how to “scratch” the photo to make it look like he was part of the main cast display.

This is a powerful throwback to a time of pure, unadulterated passion for cinema. It’s a testament to his journey, from a theater owner in Kerala dreaming of the big screen to becoming a beloved actor.
